Europe still harbours unique pockets of culture that resist the uniformity of modern Western life. On this tour, you'll connect with passionate locals who are dedicated to preserving their vibrant traditions, welcoming you into their villages and homes. It's a journey meant for those with open minds and hearts, eager to dive into local culture and heritage.
Recognising the importance of traditional handicrafts in the Baltics for preserving cultural heritage, reflecting the region’s rich history, and fostering a sense of identity across generations, we’ve incorporated a couple of craft workshops into the itinerary. These workshops are open to everyone - no need to be a master crafter! While some prior experience can be helpful, it’s not required. If you want to bring along your partner or a friend who isn't interested in the workshops, we can arrange alternative activities for them, so you can fully enjoy your crafting sessions. The focus on this tour is on new experiences, savouring local cuisine, and enjoying the company of fellow travellers, all while exploring fascinating places and engaging with colourful, captivating locals.
These countries have a complex and turbulent history, having been ruled at various times by Danes, Swedes, Germans, and Russians. After enduring centuries of conquest and serfdom under competing empires, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania achieved political and economic independence in 1920. However, their newfound independence was short-lived; by 1940, the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania, followed closely by Latvia and Estonia. Although German forces briefly interrupted Soviet control during the final years of World War II, Soviet dominance persisted until 1991.
The Baltic Way, a pivotal event in the struggle for freedom, occurred on August 23, 1989. This peaceful political demonstration saw around two million people join hands to form a 600-kilometre-long human chain across the Baltic states. This powerful act of unity symbolised their collective desire for independence and their commitment to regaining their freedom from Soviet control.
Join us on an unforgettable journey hosted by our founder, Leila Myllymäki-Hay. Leila will welcome you in Riga, the vibrant capital of Latvia. If you wish to extend your journey, we’d be delighted to arrange a continuation to Helsinki, Finland. As Leila’s former hometown, Helsinki holds a special place in her heart, and she would be thrilled to share her favourite spots and insider tips with you!

August 21, 2025 Flax to Linen Experience & Seto Culture Day
After breakfast we continue to the home farm of Margit Pensa, a Linen Master (drive time about 30 mins).
Margit Pensa is one of Estonia’s few remaining linen makers, dedicated to preserving the nearly lost tradition of linen spinning. Recognising the near extinction of this centuries-old craft, Margit took it upon herself to revive and sustain it. After her studies, she began her own practical work and trained under experienced linen makers. Today, Margit has taught over 100 students and regularly conducts workshops on linen plucking, brushing, and spinning. At her home, Margit will give us a talk and a demonstration of the process of transforming flax plants into linen fibre.
After bidding farewell to Margit, we'll continue our journey to Setomaa (drive time about 50 mins).
Setomaa, located in southeastern Estonia near the Russian border, is a region steeped in rich cultural heritage and scenic splendour. This unique area is home to the Setos, a distinct ethnic group with their own language, traditions, and vibrant folk culture. Visiting Setomaa offers a fascinating glimpse into a world where age-old customs and a strong sense of community are preserved with pride.
We enjoy lunch at Taarka Tarõ Köögikõnõ, which with its cosy and inviting interior, is a vibrant center of Seto culture. Hosts Rieka and Aare Hõrn, esteemed leaders in Seto traditions, ensure that every guest experiences the essence of daily Seto life. The café serves authentic Seto cuisine alongside a variety of Finno-Ugric and Ukrainian dishes.
During dessert, we enjoy a brief Leelo concert. Seto ‘leelo,’ a polyphonic singing tradition listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2009, is a 2,000-year-old practice that continues to thrive. The Setos have always been a singing culture partly due to the fact that the Seto language has been an oral language and the Setos were mostly illiterate until a 100 years ago. Singing has been the way to express joy but also envy, sadness and grief. Singing has helped make working on the fields or in the house more tolerable and easier to bear. The Setos really have a song for every occasion, especially as improvisation is a crucial skill of Seto ‘leelo’. Songs are made on the spot, on each occasion, and luckily there are still local singers who can do that.
After lunch we pay visit to the Seto Gallery showcasing a permanent collection of both historical and contemporary Seto art and folk art. The gallery features a studio dedicated to crafting traditional Seto jewellery and a workshop for block and silk screen printing, where Seto-patterned tapestries and textiles are also created. Hosted by the creative and dynamic duo Kauksi Ülle and Evar Riitsaar, who are also musicians with their own band, we might even be treated to a live performance. Additionally, we’ll participate in a short workshop to decorate our own shopping bags using block printing techniques.
After this creative interlude, we'll visit Obinitsa Museum to meet Mrs. Õie Sarv, a key cultural figure and guardian of Seto heritage. Here, we'll participate in a "Dress as a Seto" workshop, where one group member will be transformed into a Seto woman with authentic attire.
We'll cap off our enriching cultural day with a special Seto dinner at Inara Luigas' charming café, located in a historic school building. Known for her expertise in pelmeni dumplings and sõir cheese, Inara also plays the traditional Seto accordion. We might even be treated to a live performance!
After dinner, we'll continue our journey to Tartu, where we'll stay for the next three nights (drive time about 1hr 10 mins).
Overnight at Hotel Lydia (or similar). Hotel Lydia is nestled on Toomemägi Hill behind Tartu’s Town Hall Square. It offers 70 rooms, a spa lounge with diverse saunas, a fitness club, and the Hõlm restaurant.

The Onion Route is a collection of charming, winding villages along the shore of Lake Peipus.
