Estonians have a deep relationship with food and so to fully appreciate this charming country, you will need to engage your taste buds. Locally grown, seasonal ingredients form the foundations of any self-respecting Estonian dish, whether it’s street food or Michelin star, traditional or contemporary.
Most travellers to Estonia only visit Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, which is a shame as there is so much more to this beautiful country! For example the islands off the Estonian coast are virtual dreamlands, unlike anything in Europe. There are more than a thousand of them lining the Estonian coast. They are retreats from fast-paced city life and the islands have a laid-back, friendly air about them. The landscape is considered quintessentially Estonian, with many windmills, thatched cottages and sleepy fishing villages.
On this tour we have combined a stay in Tallinn with a few days on the Island of Muhu. Muhu is among the smaller islands, with a definitive character of its own. It has developed over the centuries at its own pace, its traditions are well known all over Estonia - particularly its dance and song traditions and the famous Muhu patterns, refined expressions of folk-art.
In Tallinn you are staying in a beautiful hotel in the Old Town that has found its home in medieval stone warehouses. Every room in this small boutique hotel is different oozing centuries of old charm. When the hotel was built all the valuable old structural details were painstakingly preserved and exposed in their original splendour. Almost as if untouched by the passing centuries, the central chimney, portals of cut stone, small spiral staircases, and living chambers with irregular corners and wall niches, showcase the classic limestone architecture from medieval times.
On Muhu Island you are staying at a historic 15th century Baltic estate located in an unspoilt nature reserve on the shores of the Baltic Sea. This painstakingly restored manor house offers comfort and understated luxury. There are no ostentatious displays of glitz or glamour, no thick wall-to-wall carpets or gold plated taps but sumptuous bespoke bedding, luxuriant fabrics and exquisite local antiques next to modern classics create a tactile and inviting environment.
Here you find a haven for the senses: here everything is about truly seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. The silence, the sweeping views, the scent of the northern meadows and forests, the crispness of the evening cold, the velvety darkness and starry skies will stay with you long after your visit.

This trip includes a 30 minute ferry crossing from the mainland. Upon arrival at the historic manor your are welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine. and selection of local gourmet 'goodies' in your room.
Tonight a four-course Table d’Hôte dinner is served in the manor's fine dining restaurant. This restaurant is listed in the prestigious Michelin Guide and offers an amazing culinary combination of urban sophistication and wholesome countryside traditions in a casual elegant setting. The food here is prepared respecting the seasons and making the best use of fresh local ingredients acquired from the island’s producers and farmers, while many of the greens and herbs are grown in the manor's own gardens and green houses
Day 5: Explore Muhu Island
Early risers take a stroll on the shore where the first rays of sun beat the early morning fog. After breakfast your personal guide and driver are waiting to take you to Koguva, a charming fishing village. The village of Koguva offers some of the most outstanding examples of Estonian peasant architecture.
At Koguva you will also visit the local museum. A little further on lies the 13th century Muhu stronghold. In 1227 this was the site where the last Estonian resistance gave way to German Crusaders and where the last European heathens were defeated and baptised by order of Pope Honorius III. Your guide might take you; to the 13th century St. Catherine’s church rising tall with its simple elegance; or to a former Soviet nuclear rocket base, decaying now, hidden in a deep forest. Before returning to Pädaste we will visit a nearby prehistoric grave field, simple and untouched. Hidden in the forest and long forgotten after its discovery a hundred years ago, now known only to locals. There are many other places of interest to see on Muhu and the pleasure of having a personal guide and driver is that you are free to change and discuss the schedule according to your own preference. You will drive back for lunch at Pädaste Manor.
After some rest, book yourself a relaxing sauna experience or a spa treatment. Most treatments at the Manor Spa are based on centuries old Estonian herbal traditions, that befit the unspoiled beauty and harmony of Muhu Island. You don't find any global brands here - all oils, crèmes and skin-spreads used in the spa are freshly prepared daily using only pure & natural ingredients of the highest quality.
A four-course Table d’Hôte dinner is served in the manor's fine dining restaurant.
Day 6: Visit Saaremaa Island
Join a yoga stretching session this morning. After breakfast you will head off with your guide to the Island of Saaremaa.
Our destination is Kuressaare, a charming town famous for the Bishops Castle. The 14th Century Castle is the only one still intact in the Baltics and beautifully surrounded by moats and a park. The historic museum in the Castle is worth visiting. We'll have a picnic in the park or inside the Castle before a walk through the centre of Kuressaare with its small market and charming streets with wooden houses. On our drive back to the manor, we visit the Kraali Meteorite Crater, legends tell of its spiritual and healing power. If time permits we will also visit the fortified Church at Pöide. Its thick walls out of red brick tell the story of power of the Nobles. Pöide church is the site of the first great uprising of Estonian peasants in the 15th century, the Baltic nobles where kept hostage inside for a week.
A four-course Table d’Hôte dinner is served in the manor's fine dining restaurant.
